About Hollis Richardson

A fondness for the luxury and vividness of oil paint colors animates Richardson's creativity. His artwork is dominated by pleasing, richly colored patterns and forms, featuring unique, stylized human figures, faces, and the occasional landscape to leave the viewer enamored. Women are prominently featured as a recurring subject of his work, showcasing his appreciation and empathy towards them. Richardson's depiction of women is reflective and often whimsical, imbued with decorative elements that mirror his insights and subtle humor about human nature. Richardson's modern art doesn't merely express; it divulges his deepest emotions. His sensitivity towards life flows through his art, offering a glimpse into a mind cultivated over eight decades of active creativity and evolution. His journey has been towards a more pristine form of painting, focusing on instant expression. Richardson's confidence derived from extensive experience allows him to create in an offhand manner. His contemporary oil paintings are consequently subjective and whimsical, nurturing high imaginative value. His craft modulates between flamboyant figures and the distilled essence of his subjects. Realistic imagery is replaced with stylized motifs and forms, guiding the viewer's eye through the canvas. He meticulously places the colors to lend strength and chromatic richness to his artwork. Richardson's portfolio is also replete with abstract masterpieces. His compositions, whether representational or non-representational, speak volumes about his skill. Richardson's biography further sheds light on various artists who inspired his journey, and references to his various exhibitions and awards provide a detailed overview of his accomplishments.

Hollis richardson on sucessful art

“All good artwork should have an abstract quality to it. The colors and composition should sing and have rhythm. Each piece should effectively include all the elements of design. I strongly recommend beginning artists take time to learn drawing skills before taking up painting. The point is not to become a realistic artist, but to learn to see space and shapes and master the art of composition before adding the element of color and progressing to original oil paintings. People inquire about the source of my artistic inspiration. Subject matter for me, is subjective and comes as I work on the overall composition. I begin with ideas about color and shapes and then the painting develops spontaneously as I work. My paintings are an expression of my feelings and a realty that is beyond my ability to express verbally. It has taken me a lifetime to learn the technical skills and to create my visions with meaning and purpose. I am always reaching for that perfect combination of elements of art that communicates and elicits a response from the viewer. It is a never ending challenge to continually stretch for yet a better work of art with the elements of design. When you buy my art, you are buying more than an object, it something that is the culmination of my life experiences.”
